An amazing image and tribute to the men who risked their lives that others might live. Can't really tell the color, but it looks like blackish gray. I can't really tell the make of the downed plane. It looks to be a German cross on it's side. That P-51 flying cover has D-Day Invasion stripes on the wings, so obviously it's in the ETO. My Father was crew chief on a PBY-5 Catalina in the ETO. His plane was painted in the livery of RAF Coastal Command, but with USAAF markings. This was due to the fact that his plane had been manufactured in Canada. I suppose it was a kind of reverse lend-lease deal. Canadian Catalina's were named Casino's. He had a Vargas Pin-up painted on the nose and the plane and she was named the "Miss Pick-Up". They rescued many airman from both sides of the conflict. He later transitioned into the SA-16 Grumman Albatross'. This was not as good as the Cat's though, as the plane was underpowered with all the equipment regulations required. Forcing the use of JATO/RATO units. Your image is really great. The sea looks incredible, with the mist and rain adding to the overall effect. Great Work!

Very good indeed.  That ugly plane was often the most beautiful sight in the world.

Thanks for your comments they're much appreciated.
It's from the days before I discovered 3D, so the aircraft are screen grabs, the landing effects are hand painted in Photoshop, the sea and sky are taken from different pictures then the lighting on the water and other effects are all photoshop jobs.
