Interception by jncarter Interception by jncarter
Situation: Civil Airbus, 200 passengers, no radio communication.

Aircraft has strayed off track.

Two F-16's have been tasked to intercept, identify and neutralise any threat. One moves into station behind the airliner whilst the other closes for a visual inspection.

If ordered, could you fire on a civil aircraft ?

Composited and rendered in Lightwave. Post work in Photoshop CS4

The orders may be to shoot, but if that's the order then it's an illegal order, which means that he can't court-martial me for insubordination.

As a soldier you never ever fire on civilians. Whether you're an Army-dog, a Squid, or a Flyboy, that thing is common among everybody who has ever served.

I wouldn't fire on a civi plane but if it was going to be used to kamikaze into something, I'd shoot up one of the engines and tail

In the pilot's head:
"I shouldn't...but there are orders...I'm not responsable...but the guns are mine...AAARGH!! WHAT SHOULD I DO, MOM ??!!"

Best scenario was on Oct. 11, 1985 - F-14s intercepted hijacked 737, no shots fired.

I think, if it were a last resort, I would fire on the engines and leave all the control surfaces intact, that way they wouldn't be able to get far, but would be able to glide down with control of the airplane. Either way, not a good situation. D: I would avoid shooting at all costs.

I don't think anyone can answer this question, not even any combat pilot except Major Gennadi Osipovich who shot down Korean Boeing 747 on September 1, 1983.

If I was given the order to shoot down a commercial airliner, I'd make very sure there were no passengers. If there was, I couldn't bring my self to press that trigger on the stick

The "HELIOS" incident in Aug 2005 was real and here's the link:

[link]

There's also a Youtube gun camera from the F16 following the target.
The pilots speak Greek. And btw not all of the passengers were dead
